Digital Librarian: History
The Digital Librarian is one of the best reference sites on the web. It was created and is run by librarians who choose interesting sites and check them out regularly (virtually no dead links). The sites range from African-American Women - On-line Archival Collections to First-Person Narratives of the American South, 1860-1920 to the Ellis Island Foundation, where you'll find a wealth of information about immigration and immigrants. There are also a lot of mainstream history sites.

For classroom use, research, or some fascinating browsing, you can go from America from the Great Depression to World War II: Photographs from the FSA and OWI, 1935-1945 to Washington As It Was: Photographs by Theodor Horydczak.

Library of Congress: American Memory
